| Kindergarten Transition
Cronulla South Public School recognises the importance of
a happy transitioning process from prior to school centres
to primary school for both children and parents. Our staff
has been involved in the N.S.W. Government initiative "Families
First". This training heightened our awareness of the many
factors to be taken into consideration when transitioning
our kindergarten children e.g. friendships, physical and
emotional needs of individual children, larger teacher to
student ratio, bigger physical environment and many much
larger children.
Children with special needs need to contact their prior
to school centre director and/or the principal to discuss
needs and if necessary to be linked with services to support
their child's entry to school.

Information Evening for Parents
Parents are invited to attend the school on Wednesday, September 2, at 7pm for an information evening about our programs at Cronulla South Public School.
Orientation Day An Orientation Day for parents
and children will be held on Wednesday 9th September from 9.30am - 11.30am. On this day
a Year 5 child will take children and parents on a tour of
the school. Our prospective kindergarten children will be
involved in activities in the kindergarten classrooms and
will be given morning tea whilst parents are provided with
the opportunity to have our Student Welfare Policy, which
incorporates Restorative Practices, explained.
Play Afternoon
On Tuesday 27th October from 1.30pm
- 2.30pm and Thursday 12th November from 1.30pm - 2.30pm the
children are invited to a Play Afternoon where
the children will meet up with their buddy and spend time
participating in activities in the kindergarten classroom
and the Computer Lab. During this time parents will have
the opportunity to participate in information sessions
on "How children learn to read" and "Maths in K-2.
As part of our overall transitioning program our current
kindergarten children visit three of our local prior to school
centres for a 'show and tell' session. We also invite these
centres to attend "big school visits" for their children
who are transitioning to primary school. Most primary schools
operate in similar ways and thus this program supports all
children regardless of the school the children will attend.
Some of the sessions include:
- A visit to the Library
- Working in the Computer Lab
- Participating in PE activities
- A reading session in the kindergarten classroom with the current kindy children
- Having morning tea/lunch and using the "big toilets"
Family Interviews
Family interviews will be scheduled with the Assistant Principal
on Tuesday 10th November or Thursday 19th November between 8am
and 6pm.
First day of School 2010
Kindergarten students will not commence school until they have completed the Best Start Assessment. This is a new government initiative that was first implemented in 2008 to increase support for the teaching and learning of literacy and numeracy for our youngest students. The NSW Department of Education and Training has proposed a number of organisational strategies that allow schools to delay, stagger or stage the enrolment process so that Kindergarten teachers are able to complete this important assessment process by the middle of Week 2.
At Cronulla South Public School Kindergarten parents would bring their child to school at a designated time on one of the following dates – Friday 29th January, Monday 1st February, or Tuesday 2nd February for approximately an hour. The child will be assessed by a Kindergarten teacher and the parent(s) will collect them afterwards and resume responsibility for their child. The assessment schedule will be determined during parent interviews on Tuesday 10th November or Thursday 19th November 2009.
All Kindergarten students would formally start school for the entire day on Wednesday 3rd February.
