Student Reflection of 'Crossing the Bridge' Conversation
14th August 2007

Crossing the Bridge

A few weeks ago most of Stage 3 went to Gunnamatta Park. When we got there we sang the national anthem followed by the Dharawal version, then we did activities about what other people think about Australia, whether they feel Australian or not and why. I particuarly liked drama and the environment activities because we learnt about other people’s religions and had a lot of fun. Everybody’s unique in their own way.

On Tuesday the 14th of August some Year Five and Year Six students went down to Gunnamatta Park to learn and share about values. It was fun learning about lots of kids' values and interesting things about their lives. Also we learned that it doesn’t matter what you look like or where you come from, we all should be treated the same. What I most liked about the day was bonding and playing with kids from different cultures and communities. I think there should be more days like these because it is great fun for us to learn and tell kids about our lives and our cultures.

On Tuesday the 14th of August Stage 3 from Cronulla South Public School walked down to Gunnamatta Park to do some Values Day activities and mix with other cultures. The activities I did were; a conversation, the environmental activity and sport. My favourite activity was the environmental one because I was told an Aboriginal story about why the Aboriginal people don’t eat the echidna. The reason is because the echidna is one of their brothers. I really valued that I had the chance to meet all the other schools and all the different cultures. I made a friend at the last day at Bankstown and saw her at the Crossing the Bridge day and now we are really good friends.

On Tuesday 14th August 2007 students from Cronulla South Public School and many other schools went to Gunnamatta Park to learn about each others cultures and to work together. First we all sang the national anthem and then the Dharawal version. Students from Cronulla South got to sing on a stage.

Next I headed off to my first activity which was drama. I met a girl called Kirsten from Gymea High School. After that we had recess. At recess I played with my friends and girls from other schools on the playground. When recess was over I found my next group and we did a conversation activity. We talked about what we liked about being Australian and when we most feel Australian. I said that I most feel Australian when I’m watching the Australian Sport teams play and when I’m with my friends.

When that activity ended we all headed out for lunch which was provided for us. I enjoyed playing on the playground with my friends. My last activity was environment. In environment we were put in groups and then each group got a compass and some directions. The directions took us to a man called Shane who told us a story about an echidna. Then we did Aboriginal face painting. I liked environment activity the best.

Finally we headed back to school. At the end of the day I learnt about lots of different cultures and how they are not so different from us after all.

On the 14th of August Year 5 went to Gunnamatta Park for a values day. I really enjoyed the environmental activity and I really liked the story about the echidna (the story was about how the echidna got its spikes was really interesting) and I also liked the ps3 (not the playstation 3!) conversation. They asked us what it feels to be an Australian. I learnt that it doesn’t matter if you are dark or light skins, we’re all the same. Everyone’s special in their own way.

On the 14 August Stage 3 went to Gunnamatta Park. We met people from 9 other schools and we had a “crossing the bridge” day. We had to do a conversation, drama and sport. I learnt that it doesn’t matter what skin colour you have because we’re still the same. I learnt most people value sport and drama. I have a friend named Jack from another school. He loved to play football.

This magnificent day was to cross the bridge of our religions.  I particularly enjoyed the Oz-Tag because we all worked as a team. I learnt many values but my favourite was the value of the hajib. I think this day was beneficial. No more us and them. That’s what I think

I went down to Gunnamatta Park with some of the other Year 5 students and a couple of Year 6 students to learn and interact with other cultures. On the day I did a drama, conversation and environmental activities. I particularly liked doing environmental activities with the other cultures because we were in groups and the groups all did orienteering activities together. I found that all the other schools shared the fair go value because at recess and lunch people from all different schools played a big game of touch football.

I went down to Gunnamatta Park on Tuesday. I learnt a little bit of the story about the echidna in the environment lesson. I really like the story about the echidna is a human with sphere on its back and after a long time it turn into an echidna. I also really enjoyed helping the environment clean. I learnt the values about the other cultures with different colour skins. My favourite lesson was talking to each other in a conversation activity.

The purpose of going to Gunnamatta Park was to learn about other religions and cultures. Year 5 at our school went there for our Crossing the Bridge day. The point of the day was to interact with people with different coloured skin. We all had our special little card saying what our activities were. My activities were Sport, Environment and Conversation PS3.

My favourite activity was sport. We Played OZTAG. It was really cool. I met a boy called Johnny. He was really nice to me, and oh, did I mention he was hilarious as well. I really enjoyed the Crossing the Bridge day at Gunnamatta Park and I think our school should do it again in future years to come.

On this awesome day at Gunnamatta Park we did lots of activities such as sport, drama and conversations. There was also recess and lunch time. I enjoyed the activity called environment because we used compasses and we had our faces painted. I learnt that other people enjoy sport and can be shy.

On Tuesday year 5 went down to Gunnamatta park. One of the purposes of the day is to take racism away. There were different schools like Punchbowl High, Malecfard  and many more. My activities were picture valley, sport and  conversation. My favourite one was sport. I think everyone should not be judged on what they look like or what they wear. Some people even thought the same things. I really liked the day and if I had a opportunity I would go again.
